Cairns & Far North

Sugar-cane rum, tropical-fruit wine, and a reef-side beer garden. The Far North's drinks scene is small, surprising, and rewards the curious traveller.

The Far North is the youngest scene in our network — and the most surprising. Sugar-cane rum from the Mossman cane fields. Tropical fruit wine from the Atherton Tablelands. A small but excellent craft brewery overlooking the reef.

Our Cairns crew runs three tours. They’re slow-paced by our network’s standards (the climate forces it), and they lean more on regional production and food than the southern city tours. Best between April and October — the wet season is genuinely too hot for daytime tasting.

What’s worth coming for

Cairns Rum & Cane Tour. A working sugar mill, a small-batch rum distillery, and a tasting-and-tour at the country’s only mill-to-bottle rum producer.

Atherton Tablelands Wine Day. Three small producers working with mango, lychee, and other tropical fruit. Strange, surprisingly serious, and not available anywhere else in Australia.

Reef-Side Brewery Sunset. A single stop, a single brewer, and the best beer-garden view in the country. Two hours, very chill, perfect for the last day of a longer trip.
