South Australia is the most-overlooked drinks state in the country. The Barossa is the historical heart of Australian shiraz. McLaren Vale is the better wine-and-coast day-trip. The Adelaide Hills do cool-climate pinot and chardonnay better than most. And the city itself has a small but excellent gin scene.

Our Adelaide crew runs five tours, all departing from the CBD. The flagship is the Barossa Winery Weekend, which is exactly what it sounds like — two nights, two cellar door days, and a long lunch at Maggie Beer’s.

What’s worth coming for

Barossa Winery Weekend. Three or four cellar doors, a long lunch at Maggie Beer’s, and a Sunday brunch at Hentley Farm. Tour pickup from Adelaide CBD on Friday afternoon.

McLaren Vale Shiraz Day. Three small-producer cellar doors, a paired lunch at d’Arenberg, and a stop at the Aphelion winery. Day-trip from Adelaide.

Adelaide Hills Cellar Door Loop. Six cellar doors in a single afternoon — the highest density of small-producer tasting we run anywhere in Australia.
